Biomega Group invests in new biorefinery at Port of Hirtshals

Biomega Group expands its business by investing in a new biorefinery at the Port of Hirtshals for the purpose of producing high-quality marine ingredients that can contribute to increased human health and nutrition. The new biorefinery follows the company's recent upgrade of its flagship site, strategically located on the Norwegian west coast near Bergen.

With a double-digit million EUR investment in a new facility at the Port of Hirtshals, Biomega does not only expand its production capacity support the company's plans to grow its new "Biomega PURE" salmon peptide busines for the human health and nutrition market - a product that will be launched in 2021. It will also facilitate continued growth of its highly successful Salmigo range designed for premium petfood segments.

Unique location
Due to the Port of Hirtshals' unique geographic location directly to the sea corridors in the North Sea and a well-developed hinterland infrastructure, Hirtshals offers a long line of opportunities for companies engaged in the production and handling of fresh salmon.

- The Port of Hirtshals is an important gateway for salmon into Europe with local volumes growing substantially year-on-year, and we are excited by the opportunity that Hirtshals brings to expand our business. Biomega has received tremendous support from the local authorities, Hjørring Municipality and the Port of Hirtshals, for the development of the project, says CEO at Biomega Stig Petersen.

Leading within bioscience
Biomega produces food and petfood based on high-quality marine ingredients and has demonstrated a significant growth in the past couple of years. The company uses its unique, patented, enzymatic hydrolysis process to gently transform fresh salmon parts into high value, food grade, hydrolysed salmon proteins and oils for sectors such as premium food and petfood, health and nutrition.

- We are proud to welcome Biomega, one of the leading companies within bioscience, to the Port of Hirtshals. Besides being an exciting business addition to the port, it is also a company that fits incredibly well into the port's cluster of salmon companies, expresses Anker Laden-Andersen, Chairman of the board at the Port of Hirtshals, who is convinced that they can benefit from each other.

Biomega has obtained four patents for its biorefining process and has invested over 20 years in research and development in sustainable nutrition and biorefining.
