Smyril Line's new service to Hirtshals exhibits growth after the first six months
In January, Smyril Line started a new service from Hirtshals to Torshavn on the Faroe Islands and Thorlakshöfn in Iceland. Thorlakshöfn is located 40 km south of the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. The service is operated by the vessel M/V "Akranes", and after the first six months, the service is exhibiting a steady growth on the traffic between West Iceland and Hirtshals.
Through the last couple of years, Smyril Line has implemented a range of strategic initiatives, which have placed the company on a clear growth course. Simultaneously, the market area has been expanded step by step. A few years ago, Smyril Line expanded its services with a service to Rotterdam, and now West Iceland has also been added to the service network. This means that Smyril Line covers both the eastern and western part of Iceland with weekly arrivals of ro/ro traffic.

- We could see a potential in a new ro/ro service to the western part of Iceland, as we have the competences to deliver a competitive product for trailer traffic. We can see from the development that the market has had a positive reaction to our initiative, and we expect this positive development to continue. There will always be fluctuations in the traffic on a new service, and the corona situation has also affected us, but the general picture is positive, says managing director at Smyril Line Runí Vang Poulsen.

As part of the company's strategic investments, a new logistics terminal was built at the Port of Hirtshals in 2018. Here Smyril Line performs cross docking of its own traffic on the North Atlantic Ocean. Besides handling its own traffic, Smyril Line is also ready to cooperate with other companies, who see a potential in distribution to and from e.g. Norway with reloading in Hirtshals.
