Smyril Line and HMU Inc. initiate first construction work on the land expansion at the Port of Hirtshals

The first large construction work is starting to show on the land expansion recently established near the Nordsø Terminal. Smyril Line has joined forces with HMU A/S in Hirtshals who works as the turnkey contractor, and together they have started the construction of a 3,350 m² administrational and storage building, located close to the Nordsø Terminal and Containerkajen where three of the Smyril Line's ships call into port on a weekly basis. 

Smyril Line's construction on the Port of Hirtshals includes an administrational building of 600 m², a 2,700 m² storage building and a 50 m² terminal office, all with a prominent location on a 17,000 m² area right by the drive way to the Nordsø Terminal.

Carsten Kjær, CEO at Smyril Line Cargo, looks forward to the coming months' activities:
- At Smyril Line, we look very much forward to developing our activities and strengthening our position at the Port of Hirtshals with this construction. The location and design of the building is constructed to ensure effective and quick operations when dealing with the cargo from our ships and when servicing both cargo and passenger customers.

Carsten Kjær continues:
- Now that the construction has begun, we have already moved on to the next challenge which is recruiting new and qualified employees for the daily operations and tasks in the terminal. We are about to create a new and well-run organization here in Hirtshals, and that is a very exciting process which will go on for the next couple of years.

The construction work was initiated in February and is scheduled to be done in the fall of 2018 when Smyril Line expects to start using the new facilities for servicing their customers and ships. 

In connection with the new construction work, Claus Roden Jensen, CEO at HMU A/S in Hirtshals, says:
- As the turnkey contractor on this construction work, it has been an extremely interesting job starting with the initial talks with the management of Smyril Line and up until now where the actual construction work has begun. It has been an intense process where all the details had to come together but we are very pleased with how professionally it has all been done. We have designed the building in close collaboration with Smyril Line's architects, consulting engineer Ole Møgelmose, the CAD-drafting office, and the shipping company's cargo department. This close collaboration has resulted in a building which is both aesthetically beautiful and highly functional. 

Smyril Line's ferry, M/S "Norrøna" which is especially built for sailing the North Atlantic Ocean, carries both passengers and cargo between Hirtshals in Denmark, Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands, and Seyðisfjørð in Iceland. M/S "Norrøna" sails once a week during winter and twice a week during summer. 

In the last years, Smyril Line has strengthened its position in the North Atlantic, and the shipping company has created significant growth in the cargo transport with the company's four ships. In addition to M/S "Norrøna", Smyril Line's fleet consists of ro/ro and side loader M/S "Hvitanes" and M/S "Eystnes" which both sail between Tórshavn, Hirtshals, and Saint Petersburg. The latest initiative in Smyril Line's growth strategy was the 2017 establishment of the cargo route between the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Rotterdam in the Netherlands which is sailed by the ro/ro ship M/S "Mykines".
