The first visible signs of the expansion of the Port of Hirtshals

During week 43, the first signs will start to show that the land expansion east of the Port of Hirtshals is becoming a reality. During the week, geotechnical drillings will be carried out in the area where the land expansion is planned to happen.

A number of trial drillings will be done east of the current port areas in order to learn more about the geotechnical conditions in the area. This soil data will form the basis for the planning of the land expansion as well as for the engineerical calculations that will determine the dimensions of the peers.
The geotechnical tests are conducted by GEO and there will be a jack-up rig in the area from which the drillings will be done.

The expansion of the Port of Hirtshals consists of a land area of 250,000 square kilometer where there will be an area specifically designed as a waiting area for cars and semitrailers as well an industrial area for maritime industries and portrelated stock and production. The areas for the maritime industry will be near the wharf which creates a great opportunity for servicing ships with a deep draft.

In connection with the start-up of the preliminary work in the construction area, the technical director of the Port of Hirtshals, Peter Ydesen, says: ?We expect that the construction workers can start working in the beginning of 2015, but before that, all approvals and permissions have to be in order. After that, the construction work will be put to EU tender. This is necessary due to the size of the construction work. There is a list of clear procedures we have to comply with, and that takes time. Naturally, we follow all the established procedures with a respect for hearing periods and the likes."
