The Port of Hirtshals has a number of niche businesses and monitors continuously the development to be ready to intensify its focus if the activity level increases or new business opportunities emerge.

General cargo
The Port of Hirtshals has an increased focus on activities within general cargo and wants to strengthen the market position in this field over the next few years. Together with shipbrokers and stevedores at the port, the Port of Hirtshals primarily focuses on the development and growth of activities within general cargo in Central and Northern Norway as well as the development of potential traffic.

The Port of Hirtshals is called in frequent traffic by the shipping companies Samskip/Nor Lines and With Line that operates scheduled services on the Norwegian west coast. The handling of general cargo is done at the eastern part of the port which contains chilled and cold stores near the quay and therefore provides a good basis for future development of traffic.

Bulk
The bulk traffic is a niche business which is continuously developed in close cooperation between companies at the port and the Port of Hirtshals.

Bulk activities at the Port of Hirtshals include today:
  • Raw materials in the form of imported stone material
  • Import of marine gas oil
  • Import of ensilage


The Port of Hirtshals has the physical surroundings for receiving dry bulk like for example stones, grain and waste because self-loading vessels or cranes requested from an external operator are used for loading and unloading.

Special cargo
The Port of Hirtshals has the facilities for handling special cargo such as heavy cargo and project cargo. The handling of special cargo is done over a ro/ro ramp designed for heavy cargo - Containerkajen is dimensioned for particular heavy loads. It is also possible to request machinery and a mobile crane for handling of special cargo through a local stevedore company at the port.
