Construction work at the Port of Hirtshals - this time wind turbine foundations


The foundation excavations for two of the four wind turbines that are going to be installed at the Port of Hirtshals are easy to spot with dimensions of 22 metres in diameter and up to 6 metres in depth each. The establishment of the first two foundations has now begun, and the establishment of the remaining two foundations begins within a few weeks.

During the second half of 2019 the work with the installation of the four Vestas V136 4.2 MW wind turbines will characterise the land expansion on Østhavnen at the Port of Hirtshals. The wind turbines are delivered and installed in September and October, after which they are planned to be put into operation in weeks 42-44.

The dimensions of the wind turbines are impressive; Each of the four foundations weighs up to 5,400 tonnes, the rotor has a diameter of 136 metres, and the actual wind turbine has a height of 150 metres. The wind turbines can each produce 17.5m kWh, which means that the four wind turbines together can produce electricity corresponding to the consumption of 14,500 households. By comparison, there are about 2,000 households in Hirtshals.



Hirtshals Havnefond is behind the installation of the wind turbines, and during July the foundation will begin the sale of wind turbine shares to the citizens living within 4.5 kilometres from the wind turbines.

Chairman of the board at the Port of Hirtshals, Anker Laden-Andersen expresses his satisfaction with the innovative wind turbine project at the port:
- The four wind turbines at the Port of Hirtshals are the first to be installed on purely merchant market terms which means that the turbines are installed totally subsidy-free. It has only been possible for Hirtshals Havnefond to realise the project because of the resourceful people in the foundation who have focused on the combination of wind resources and forefront technology. Now we are looking forward to the fourth quarter, where we will begin to see the production figures from the wind turbines and thereby the results of the work that the foundation has put into the installation of the turbines.
