The Port of Hirtshals has a natural geographical position for linking up traffic and cargo transport with destinations in the North Atlantic, Scandinavia, the Baltics and Northern Europe. The port's development as a cargo port is primarily focused on transit cargo in terms of ro/ro and containers on flatbeds, general cargo, bulk and project cargo.
the Port of Hirtshals offers the necessary facilities for secure and quick handling of all types of cargo between car, trailer, ship and in the long term railway.
The handling of general cargo is done at the eastern part of the port, which contains chilled and cold stores near the quay, and has good access conditions for ships seawards and trailers landwards.
The Port of Hirtshals has increased focus on strengthening the activities within general cargo, which today primarily comes to the Port of Hirtshals with the shipping company Nor Lines. The plan is to develop this area of business in the years to come in cooperation with both existing and new customers.
Bulk traffic at the Port of Hirtshals is increasing, and today the port sees bulk as a prioritised niche business, which is continuous developed in close cooperation between companies at the port and the Port of Hirtshals.
Bulk activities at the Port of Hirtshals today include:
- Raw materials in the form of imported stone materials.
- Raw materials in the form of sea materials from concession areas in the North Sea.
- Import of marine gas oil.
- Import of ensilage
For the time being, loading and unloading of dry bulk requires the use of self loading vessels.
Special cargo - project cargo/heavy cargo
The Port of Hirtshals has the facilities for handling special cargo such as project cargo and heavy cargo. The handling of special cargo is done over a ro/ro ramp designed for heavy cargo - Containerkajen is dimensioned for particular heavy loads. It is also possible to request machinery and a mobile crane for handling of special cargo through a local stevedore company at the port.
