The shipping company Smyril Line has entered an agreement with the Port of Hirtshals, making Hirtshals the company’s European port of call for traffic to and from the North Atlantic destinations at Faroe Island and Iceland. The agreement concerns all year traffic with one weekly departure during winter and two weekly departures during summer.

At the beginning of August, a delegation from Malaysia visited the Port of Hirtshals. The delegation was in Denmark to obtain knowledge about the fishery and fish farming. The delegation consisted of a consultant for the Malaysian Government, who is to identify companies with knowledge to develop the fishery and aquaculture in Malaysia, senior manager for ECER, a government agency responsible for economic development on the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula, and the principle director for MIGHT that works on attracting new knowledge and technology to Malaysia.

The administrative department of the transport company FiskeLogistik Gruppen A/S in Hirtshals has moved to new facilities at Hirtshals Fish Terminal. The administration was previously placed at Læssevej 16, where the company’s cold store and warehouse can still be found.

The programme for fish festival 2010 in Hirtshals are now ready and can be seen on the fish festival’s website www.hirtshalsfiskefestival.dk. Again this year, Hirtshals Fish Festival offers a range of fun and educational experiences revolving around fish and the fishery in Hirtshals.

The Port of Hirtshals has started a further expansion of Suensonsvej that leads to the North Sea Terminal, where for instance Fjord Line’s two ferries are situated. The expansion is being done in preparation for improving the access conditions for the existing stone and gravel terminal and the check in area for the ferry traffic.

As a new event this year, Hirtshals Fish Festival presents a Fish Chef School on Saturday the 7th of August. At the Fish Chef School you will be instructed by the best fish chef of the North Sea Oceanarium. One of the obstacles for getting people to eat more fish is often limited knowledge about how to prepare the fish at home, but the fish festivals Fish Chef School gives you the opportunity to experience how easy it actually is.

Together with 17 other fishing communities in EU, the Port of Hirtshals has been selected as a case study for an investigation of the fishery’s influence on the coastal communities.

On February 1st 2010, Hirtshals Transport Centre got a new tenant in Nielsen Marine, which is a Danish consultancy and trading company. Nielsen Marine addresses the issue of selling and profiling other companies’ products to the maritime sector. Included in this is also counselling and consultation in connection with setting up of new export markets and drawing up market research, analysis and marketing plans.

The Port of will not accept that vessels are placed in the port without any commercial purpose. Old fishing vessels among others that have been taken out of the fishery will therefore be removed.

The new defibrillator is situated at the end of the rescue station, and is therefore freely available for emergencies at the port. Quick help is crucial at cardiac arrest, and the rescue station has therefore chosen a defibrillator that can be operated by everyone.

FiskeriLAG NORD has donated an amount of approximately €8670.00 to Hirtshals Fish Festival. The funds have been donated for equipment and for the fish festival’s new website, www.hirtshalsfiskefestival.dk. Just like the fish festival getting its own website, new activities are also being developed for this year’s festival.

The two Hirtshals skippers and brothers Jesper and Lars Nielsen have invested in a larger and more modern fishing vessel. In order to meet the need for quotas and days at sea, they have merged five vessels into one, and gathered the vessels joined quotas and days at sea in the new HG 350 “Luna”. Simultaneously, old HG 350 “Luna” has been sent to the breakers.

Iceberg Seafood is a new sales office for shell-on prawns. The company was established by Jesper Lauritzen and two Greenlandic shipping companies Sikuaq Trawl and Niisa Trawl on January 1st 2010. The two shipping companies each own a prawn trawler, Sikuaq Trawl GR6-22 ”STEFFEN C” and Niisa Trawl GR6-310 ”REGINA C”.

On February 11th, the Port of Hirtshals received a rather unusual guest – a German submarine. The submarine, which came from Kiel, is a new build and arrived directly from shipyard. The vessel is in the area to perform test sailings in Skagerrak, and will stay at the Port of Hirtshals until Monday. The submarine is accompanied by the ship HDW “Herkules”, which is a support ship that is to help the submarine with the test sailings.
After the first test sailings the submarine will go back to the shipyard in Kiel, from which it will return to the area after a week in order to continue the test program. The reason that the shipyard has chosen the area around Hirtshals for testing is because of the depths of Skagerrak, which is 700 meters deep here and therefore provides ideal conditions for test dives.
The submarine is 68 meters long, 7 meters wide and has a depth of 7.20 meters from the waterline and down. Jens Berg Shipping acts as agent for the submarine that at the moment is owned by Hovaldswerke Deutche Werft AG. After the test course the submarine will be handed over to Portugal, where it will be named “Tridente”. At the moment, the crew on board the vessel consists of people from the shipyard and three Portuguese people.
The submarine was originally on its way to Kristiansand, but because of ice in the port the shipyard decided to have it call at the Port of Hirtshals instead, as this port here is ice free. Together with the agent, the port has ensured the right conditions, for instance defendring of the quay below water.

The newly started company Nanoil is engaged in a new technology of mixing regular fuel with water. The technology has been known for a while, but it has never before been done with the volumes of water that they are dealing with here. Nanoil’s product basis is emulsification machines that are used to mix water and fuel.

Vestkajens Maskinværksted, which is situated at Sydvestkajen at the Port of Hirtshals, has just expanded its current facilities with a new building of 450 m2. The new building consists of a machine shop, cleaning room for machine parts, technical room, a diesel workshop and garage and store.

Tuesday the 15th. of December at 19.45, people could see a very unusual sight as the Color Line ferry Superspeed 1 was unloaded. The reason was a special load for an offshore oil rig that the ferry was transporting. The component, which is called a column racker and is a type of lifting gear, was 42 metres long and 2.30 metres wide, and it was transported on an extra long trailer.

At the board meeting December 14th, the Port of Hirtshals elected its officers, and the board of seven has appointed attorney Anker Laden-Andersen as new chairman. Anker Laden-Andersen is partner in the law firm Hjulmand & Kaptain with speciality in business law and company consulting.

A result very close to zero Danish Kroner is the outcome of Hirtshals Fish Festival 2009, and the organisation’s chairman Jens K. Jensen describes the result as acceptable:
- The execution aspect of Hirtshals Fish Festival 2009 was very satisfying, even though Friday turned out to be very windy business. The new initiative with a fish marked below the stairs was a great success, and the atmosphere was superb from morning till night – it was simply perfect. The organisation owes sponsors and helpers a great thank you for their help in the Fish Festival 2009.

In 2008, the Port of Hirtshals was selected with ten other Danish ports to be part of a three year pilot project concerning road trains. Road trains are lorry trains of 25.25 meters with a total weight of 60 tonne – measurement of a normal lorry train is 18.50 meters and 48 tonne.

Wednesday November 4th, the Port of Hirtshals held its recurring “Port day for all”, which is the port’s annual information meeting. Here everyone with an interest in the port and its importance for Hjoerring Municipality and Northern Jutland can hear more about the port and talk to the port’s board and management.

Mid-October, a delegation from Peninsula Group in Bangladesh visited the Port of Hirtshals to look a refrigeration equipment from the refrigeration company Koelemadsen. The background for the visit is that Koelemadsen is in the middle of establishing Joint Venture cooperation with Peninsula Group concerning delivery of refrigeration equipment to a new ship for the shipping company’s fleet.

Currently, the Port of Hirtshals is doing an extensive upgrade of the Containerkaj. The upgrade is based on the cooperation between the shipping company Fjord Line and the Port of Hirtshals, which was initiated in the latter part of 2008, when Fjord Line rerouted their service to Bergen-Stavanger-Hirtshals.

At the moment, the Port of Hirtshals is establishing a new area for stretching of trawl on Sildekajen at the end of Østbassin 2. The establishment of a new trawl stretching area is based on a satisfaction survey that the port has earlier conducted among the Danish fishermen in Hirtshals. In this survey the fishermen expressed a need for a new area where they can stretch their trawls.

Friday the 6th of august, the new link span arrived at the North Sea Terminal in Hirtshals, which is the shipping company Fjord Line’s ferry berth. The link span which measures 10 x 40 metres and weighs 140 tonnes arrived in Hirtshals with the coaster M/V “Wilhelmine Steffens”. Shipping agent for the transport is the shipping company Jens Berg Shipping, which is situated at the Port of Hirtshals.

Just before the opening of Hirtshals Fiskefestival 2009, the festival can present a very special experience, which is normally only accessible for scientists, seine makers and fishermen. On Friday the 31st of July, the flume tank at the North Sea Research Park will be open for the public.

The shipping company Ruth A/S has invested in a new vessel, and on Saturday July 18th the company had “open ship” on the new HG 264 “Ruth”. The ship, which was situated at Norgeskajen, was open to anyone interested, and about 200 people had braved the weather to come down and see the new vessel.

The Port of Hirtshals is continuously seeking to improve the service for the port’s users and partners, and the latest initiative is focused on waste collection. The port wants to build a system for waste handling, which complies with the need of the users and ensures a nice appearance for the port.

Through the last couple of months, Duusgaards Malerfirma has been busy building a new sandblasting workshop. The company, which is situated at a 7,880 m2 large area directly to quay at the Port of Hirtshals, has enhanced its facilities with a 300 m2 large sandblasting workshop that is expected to be ready at the beginning of July.

It has been a busy year on Skagerrak. It has now been a year since Color Line put in M/S “SuperSpeed 1” on the service between Kristiansand and Hirtshals and M/S “SuperSpeed 2” on the service between Larvik and Hirtshals, and since then traffic has increased.

The programme for Hirtshals Fiskefestival 2009 is now in place, and again this year it offers a lot of exciting activities. As described earlier, the players within the fisheries sector at the Port of Hirtshals have entered the work involving Hirtshals Fiskefestival, which takes place Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August.

May 12th – 15th 2009, the Port of Hirtshals participated in Europe’s largest transport and logistics exhibition, Transport Logistics 2009, in Munich for the third time. The port’s marketing coordinator Ditte G. Sørensen expresses satisfaction with the result of the exhibition and looks forward to putting the new contacts and experiences into use.

Hirtshals now combines the efforts behind Hirtshals Fiskefestival (fish festival). Players of the fisheries sector at the Port of Hirtshals have entered cooperation with Hirtshals Handelsstandsforening (shopping association) and Hirtshals Tourist Association concerning the future fish festival in Hirtshals. The joined effort is to stand the test already in 2009.

At the beginning of 2009, the fisheries sector in Hirtshals has shown positive developments. In the first months of the year, approximately 10 Danish and Norwegian fishing vessels that have not previously landed at the Port of Hirtshals have landed at the port. This concerns landing of both herring for processing companies at the port and edible fish for the fish auction in FishTerminal Hirtshals. Reports from fishermen, companies and fish auction are positive, as there has been a great coherency between level of quality and price.

The Port of Hirtshals has obtained a turnover of approximately 7 million Euros in a year that has been characterised by significant investments in the infrastructure, and adaptation of core business areas: the transport and fishing sectors. In 2008, the port faced operational challenges out of the ordinary, but with visionary controlling the port achieved a result of 460,000 Euros.

As of March 1st 2009, North Atlantic Shipping by Jens Skjødt Petersen has taken over the agency of Nor Lines A/S. Nor Lines A/S is one of the largest operators of cargo transport along the northern coast line of Europe.

The Port of Hirtshals has a new procedure for registering disposal of waste to the port. Now ships just have fill in an electronic registration form on the port’s website www.portofhirtshals.com. Previously, ships used their own registration forms by disposal of waste. This form was faxed to the Port of Hirtshals prior to arrival, and the port then faxed it on to the Environmental Protection Agency. The new electronic registration system has made the working procedure easier for both ships and port control.

After several years of wear and tear by salt water, the quay ladders at the Port of Hirtshals have been affected by rust, and some have simply rusted away. Therefore, the Port of Hirtshals has performed replacement of 60 quay ladders in the basin during December 2008 and January 2009. The replacement has been performed in cooperation with HMU (Hirtshals Machine Hire).

MarineShaft Hirtshals A/S has growing pains, and the company therefore expands its current facilities with a new building of 1,700 m2. The area at the port has gradually become too small, MarineShaft Hirtshals A/S has therefore built a new workshop on the outskirts of Hirtshals. The building was finished at the end of 2008 and for the moment machines are being installed. MarineShaft Hirtshals A/S expects that the first propellers can be repaired at the new work shop in February/March.

The two ferry companies at the Port of Hirtshals Fjord Line and Color Line have achieved great progress and have now made the Port of Hirtshals Denmark’s and even Europe’s entrance to Norway. Fjord Line has four weekly services between Hirtshals, Stavanger and Bergen with the ferry Bergensfjord, while Color Line’s SuperSpeed ferries 1 and 2 each have two daily services between Hirtshals, Larvik and Kristiansand.

Wednesday January 21st 2009, Harald Børsting who is chairman of the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions visited the Port of Hirtshals. Hirtshals was chosen because of its development through the last couple of years, and because it is a place of continuous activity. The aim of Harald Børsting’s visit was to check the pulse of the labour market in Northern Jutland, and at the same time to discuss the current situation of the labour market with members and leaders.

In December 2008, the Port of Hirtshals could add a new name to the list of companies at the port. As of December 1st 2008, a new stevedore company is operating at the port. The company is called Hirtshals Stevedore plc and has been established by Uffe B. S. Nielsen, who has previously worked at the shipping company Faroe Ship’s department in Hirtshals.

The ports of Hirtshals and Kolding have entered into agreement about crane trade. The agreement was made on a meeting in Hirtshals November 7th, and during November a barge will depart the Port of Hirtshals to transport the 100 ton mobile crane to Kolding.

As of November 2008, the Port of Hirtshals has entered into an agreement with the North Sea Oceanarium concerning a business partnership in connection with the renewal project “Alle Tiders Nordsø” (the Amazing North Sea) at the North Sea Oceanarium. The cooperation is the first step in the Port of Hirtshals’ strategic decision about increasing people’s level of knowledge of the fishing industry in Hirtshals. Also the cooperation is to be used to ratify the position of the Port of Hirtshals as one of the leading fishing ports in Denmark.

As of September 1st 2008, Folsoe Seafood A/S bought the house on Sydkajen 2, which was previously owned by the Port of Hirtshals. Sydkajen 2 used to house Hjoerring Erhvervscenter (Hjoerring Business center), which is now located in Hjoerring. Folsoe Seafood A/S was started as a one-man company by Bjoern Folsoe in 2003. The basis of the company is fresh and frozen fish and shellfish for the Danish fish industry. In June 2005, Nicolaj Thaisen was employed as an export manager, and later that same year he bought into the firm.

Tuesday November 18th 2008, the shipping company Color Line put into use its new check in facilities at the Port of Hirtshals. The new check in facilities are part of a large rebuilding that is being done on the shipping companies area, where the old check in facilities have been move in order to enlarge the area for cars, trucks and trailers. The goal is to make the old system more efficient and to optimize the check in part for the customers.

Approximately 10 months after the former Transport Minister Jakob Axel Nielsen cut the first turf for Hirtshals Transport Center (HTC), the centre is now open for business. Monday, November 17th 2008, HTC was opened.

Venmark Fish was started by the brothers Claus and Henrik Ibsen at the end of the 1990’s. The company had its starting point in a fish shop in Hjoerring that the father of the two brothers owned together with Henrik and the youngest brother Lars Peter. The fish shop had a wholesale department that the brothers bought and developed to the company that is today known as Venmark Fisk. Lars Peter has since sold the fish shop in Hjoerring, and is today employed as a sales man at Venmark Fisk, which benefits from his knowledge about the marked.

It was a pleased chairman of the board, Knud Størup, who welcomed between 50-60 people with an interest in the Port of Hirtshals’ “Port day for everyone”. It was the fourth time the port invited people to an open dialog and the interest for the Port of Hirtshals and its interaction with the surrounding community was great. This was made clear by the many questions that were starting point for a constructive debate about the port’s plans and the port’s view on the interface between the town and the port.

Round table conference 2008 was the fourth in a row and based on the conclusions of the conference, a new work group now has to put actions behind the ideas and thoughts that were created about the development of business activities at the Port of Hirtshals.

As of August 2008, the fishing fleet at the Port of Hirtshals has been increased by a new fishing vessel, HG 139 “Nicoline”. HG 139 “Nicoline” has been bought by the Hirtshals fisherman Peter Hejlesen, who has previously sailed with two other fishing vessels also named HG 139 “Nicoline” and one named HG 139 “Peter Hejlesen”.

This year, the Port of Hirtshals has decided to split the yearly sponsorship of € 4,700, and thereby support two good causes. The sponsorship has been split between Julemaerkehjemmet in Hobro, which is a centre for children with adjustment difficulties, and the unit Vikingbankes Venner (Friends of Vikingbanke) in Hirtshals. Vikingbanke is sheltered housing units for the elderly.

K-Fisk on Karmoey in Norway, Fiskernes Fiskesortering (the fishermen’s fish sorting) in Hirtshals and Hirtshals Fish Auction have started a cooperation that enables the Norwegian fishermen to obtain the same high settlement prices as Danish fishermen. The fish are received by K-Fisk in Skudesneshavn on Karmoey and transported to Fish Terminal Hirtshals by Color Line’s new Super Speed ferries. The fish are then sorted and packed by Fiskernes Fiskesortering, before they are sold at Hirtshals Fish Auction.

From August 12th – 15th 2008, the Port of Hirtshals and eight other companies from Hirtshals could be found on a joined stand at the international fisheries tradeshow NorFishing in Trondheim. In the four days that the trade show lasted approximately 15,000 people visited the show, and many of these showed great interest in the Hirtshals stand.

The Norwegian shipping company Fjord Line is moving all its Danish activities to Hirtshals, where the company from October 2008 will establish a service between Western Norway and Hirtshals. Simultaneously, Fjord Line and the Port of Hirtshals begin a cooperation to form basis for the development of the corridor between Northern Jutland and Western Norway.

From August 12th to 15th 2008, the Port of Hirtshals and eight other Hirtshals companies can be found on a joined stand at the international fishing trade show NorFishing in Trondheim, Norway. The trade show will be used to present the unique service and high quality that the service companies in Hirtshals offer the Danish and foreign fishing fleet.

The Hirtshals trawler HG 280 “Tucana” is part of a new pilot scheme, where a machine is installed on the ship in order to ensile fish entrails. The use of ensiling at sea has not been commercialised in Denmark before. According to skipper Morten Sørensen, the new machine will make the handling of entrails much better than it is today.

The Norwegian shipping company CTG – EIMSKIP has set up a new service between Canada, Denmark and Russia. The service departs from Bay Roberts and St. Anthony in Canada and calls at the Port of Hirtshals before it continues to St. Petersburg in Russia. The cargo basis for the service is frozen prawns on pallets and in containers.

Then it finally happened – Wednesday July 9th 2008, the port traffic light next to the Color Line terminal was turned off for the last time. The relocation of the road network on the central East Port is finished and the intersection is therefore of no use anymore.

On the board meeting June 6th, the master plan 2030-2 received the seal of approval and in that way the board of the port gave the starting signal for the plan that describes the development of the Port of Hirtshals’ physical settings towards year 2030.

On Friday the 20th of June, Color Line’s second super speed ferry arrived at the Port of Hirtshals. The ferry has been named M/S ”SuperSpeed 2”, and it was well received by the many people who had defied the weather to come down and greet the new ferry.

Skagerak Pelagic A/S will be the name of Denmark’s largest and leading processing company of herring products, and the company’s main office will be place in the Port of Hirtshals.

Thursday the 12th of June, Hirtshals Transport Centre raised the rooftree of the building that is supposed to house customs, drivers lounge, and offices for Color Line, Kystlink and KGH Spedition. The first turf for the centre was taken exactly 100 days ago, and the building is expected to be opened in September or October 2008.

In week 9, the Port of Hirtshals began to fit the pipes for the port’s two new fuel stations. The two fuel stations will be placed on Norgeskajen and they are expected to be ready in the beginning of June.

Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Eva Kjer Hansen believes that quality is the way to do it: - We can see that the consumers increasingly demand food with high quality and taste. They want products with a history. The consumers want to know where the fish is caught and how it is produced.

As of week 11, the Norwegian shipping company, Nor Lines A/S, enhances traffic between the Port of Hirtshals and the Norwegian coast with two new ships called M/S ”Nordvik” and M/S ”Nordvåg”. The ships are already known in the Port of Hirtshals, where they have previously run for EIMSKIP Faroe Ship under the names M/S ”Blikur” and M/S ”Lomur”.

On Thursday 6th of March, Color Line’s M/S “Superspeed 1” visited the Port of Hirtshals for the first time. The super speed ferry mastered the trial run perfectly, in spite of the fact that the test berth was made in strong winds at gale force 18 m/s. The trial run took place around noon and the new ramps and landing systems all worked as planned.

Wednesday the 27th of February 2008, engineer Arnbjørn Kristiansen and ISPS coordinator Rúni Hentze from the Port of Torshavn came to the Port of Hirtshals. The two men were here to see how the port protects itself against terror through a system known as ISPS.

As of January 2008, the Port of Hirtshals has made an agreement with Foreningen Hirtshals Jollehavn (the marina club for pleasure crafts) about renting out a water area in the middle basin 3 for the club’s pleasure crafts. This means that fishing vessels and pleasure crafts now get separate water areas in the port, and no longer are of inconvenience to each other.

As from January 1st 2008, the Port of Hirtshals has hired marketing coordinator Ditte G. Soerensen to manage the communication and marketing activities of the port. Ditte has a cand.mag. degree in Culture, Communication and Globalisation from Aalborg University. Ditte will provide the Port of Hirtshals with a new set of competences. Competences that are important in order to keep up the continuous development of the port and its position on the market.

January 7th 2008, the Minister of Health and Prevention (former Minister of Transport) Jakob Axel Nielsen cut the first turf for Hirtshals Transport Centre. Hirtshals Transport Centre will be one of the largest transport centres in Denmark. The centre has come in to being by virtue of the Port of Hirtshals’ role as a junction for freight traffic between Scandinavia and northern Europe.

As one of very few Danish exhibitors, the Port of Hirtshals took part in Europe’s largest transport and logistics trade fair, Transport Logistic 2007, in Munich on 12-15 June. The participation in Transport Logistic 2007, with its 1,580 exhibitors and 47,000 visitors from 113 countries, provided the visibility expected by the Port.

The Port of Hirtshals has been chosen as a hub as part of the three-year super truck pilot project which will start on 1 January 2008. The reason was partly the port’s central location in the goods corridor between Europe, Norway and the North Atlantic, and partly its proximity to the E39 motorway.

With an investment programme of DKK 110m over three years, the Port of Hirtshals is now realising the first elements of its Master Plan 2030.

The Port of Hirtshals is busy with a long overdue and thorough clear-out of the trawl door area at the West basin. The purpose is to create space for the trawl doors and equipment that are actually being used and thereby provide the best conditions for the fishermen who use the area as part of their daily work.
